New ZX5Se fire safety system protects former national pop music museum building - networked to huge city centre campus.
Sheffield Hallam's 30,000 students are dancing to a different tune, since the University acquired the iconic former National Centre for Popular Music as its new Students Union building (known as The HUBS) and now protected by a state-of-the-art Morley-IAS fire safety system.
In undertaking a complete change of use for the strikingly futuristic building, originally designed in the 1990s Morley-IAS distributor partner, Overton Electrical Services Ltd, recommended a ZX5Se-based system for The HUBS which incorporates the Students Union offices, bars and large performance spaces.
"We have been working with the University for the past five years and over that time have replaced the previous disparate fire safety systems with a common, integrated Morley-IAS addressable solution," confirms contracts manager, Carl Payne. "In recommending the ZX5Se panel therefore, a major benefit has been the ability to network The HUBS installation with the rest of the huge city centre campus, so providing a uniformly high level of protection for students, staff and visitors alike."
The Morley-IAS ZX5Se-based system incorporates a range of devices including multi-sensors pre-programmed for pop concerts and discos which regularly take place at The HUBS. "These need to take account of the frequent high levels of smoke, for example, which typically accompany rock band performances," says Sheffield Hallam Electrical Engineer, Paul Browse.
"In response, the Morley-IAS-based system provides the level of flexibility across the multi-use site which is essential in keeping false alarms to an absolute minimum."
The Morley-IAS system also includes a repeater panel in The HUBS reception area and is linked to a visual graphics package in the University's estates office. "With over 7,000 devices protecting the whole of the University campus, including several multi-storey buildings, this ensures that staff can pinpoint the exact location of any suspected incident immediately," says Payne.
"At the same time, Morley-IAS's highly intuitive user interface makes it easy to use, which is especially important when large numbers of additional security staff are used for big events at The HUBS," he adds.
